Pyramid of Kukulkan

This temple at Chichén-Itzá to a Serpent God was the center of a Mayan city built around 700 AD near the southeastern point of Mexico. At spring and autumn equinox, the shadow of the sun creates the illusion of a snake slithering down the great steps of the temple towards the sacred water source. Also evidencing the Mayan's interest in astronomy, there are a total of 365 outer steps, one for each day of the year. The site also contains an ancient ball court, where wall carvings depict the custom of sacrificing one team in the important soccer-like game after the match.
